Clara-Metade, February 2017.

The title of this series is a pun on the Portuguese word "cara-metade" meaning soulmate.

Clara and I both have Brazilian ancestry and speak the language fluently. We were both raised speaking it, going to Brazil on holiday, dancing to Ivete Sangalo and eating brigadeiro at birthday parties.

We both went through big changes at early ages. She was born in Holland, I was born in Brazil. We both moved to Paris and its suburbs quite a few times before settling down in one place. We come from the same insanely close family.

I was 13 when she was born, Clara's turned 13 last week. Beyond the physical resemblance, I see a lot of myself in her, sort of a 2.0 version of who I was in middle school. While I hated those days with a passion, Clara tackles them with maturity.

I think I've been photographing this kid since she was about 5. It's wonderful actually seeing her grow up in my work. My first true love.
